Abstract

The paper presents a relaliOrl developed to predict
mruimum dry density (MDDJ in terms of the solid
density and the gradation coefficients that
charac/erizl' the grain size distribut/rm of focally
emplayed granular fill materla/s. For thIS purpose,
two geologically different soils commonly used as
selected jill materials are blended. A large number
0/ compaction tests as required by .1latislicai
prinCIples are conducled !uing the modified
Proctor compaction procedure. The gradation
envelopes, WithIn which the (antroi parameterS are
WlYied, are selecled on the hcuiJ of local
specifications for sub-base materials. A strong
correlation j.T found between the MDD and the
specific gravity of the sohd grains. In contra.tt, the
correlatIOn between the MDD and the gradatIOn
coefficient:J including the coefficient of gradarion,
Cr. and the Uniformity coeffiCient, Cu, is weak.
The developed pred, cting formula is compared WIth existmg methods. II is observed that the developed relatIOns predict well the MDD of soils of the nature studied in this work than do the eXlstmg methods. A lest on a soli of relatively high :Jolld density revealed thaI tile developed relation looses its power of predictiOtJ when applied on soils of
solid density beyond the range studied.
