Factors Affecting the Performance of Women Entrepreneurs in MSEs in the case of Kolfe Keranyo Sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract

This study was designed to assess the major factors affecting the performance
of women entrepreneurs in MSEs. A sample of 340 women entrepreneurs
engaged in 5 sectors were taken for the study using proportionate stratified
sampling procedure. Data were analyzed using the ordinary least square
multiple regression method. The results of the study indicated that personal
characteristics of women entrepreneurs in MSEs and their enterprise affect
their performance. It also showed that lack of owned premises (land) to run
their business, lack of access to finance, inadequate access to business training,
stiff competition in the market, lack of access to technology and lack of access
to raw materials were economic-related factors that affected the performance
of women entrepreneurs in MSEs. The study also found that conflicting gender
roles or household responsibilities, network with outsiders and social
acceptability were the major social-related factors that affected their
performances. The Agency supporting MSE should give diligent attention to the
correlates of performance of MSEs.
