Abstract

The i.perative ste. in R.haric .ay
be identiFied by its selet:t-ion of a

.orphological structure. This paper
atte.pts to identiFy the nature of its
core te.plate.
In the description of the
.orphological structure of the i.perative
ste., a nonlinear .odel developed in
/lfcCarthy (1979, 1981) where the
consonantal and vocalic .elodies are
represented on separate tiers, is
adopted. The · CV tier is considered to
represent an abstract ti.ing slot. The
consonantal and vocalic .elodies are
associated with the relevant unit in the
CV tier by the principle of leFt-to-right
associ at ion.
