Socio-Demographic Determinants of Urban Unemployment: The Case of Addis Ababa

This article examines the associarion between socio-demographic variables and
unemployment in urban Ethiopia with a Jpecial emphasis on Addis Ababa using
tlata taken jrom CSA's National Labor Force Surveys oj 1999 and 2005.
Differences in the labor market outcomes are observed due to variations in sociodemographic
characteristics among the working-age population. The overall
findings imply tMt women and the youth, panicularly those below tertiary level oj
educalion, are, at all)' rate, the joremost victims of unemployment who require due
empMsis and special artelltion. Accordingly. some recommen'dations Juch as
focusing on training & skill fOf11U1tion and stimularillg employment opportunities
are pllt forwa rd.
