Abstract

This study addresses issues surrounding grade one children with
the lowest academic performance (repeaters). Four different
groups (62 females and 41 males) of grade one children were
selected from four academic years (1993-1997). The subjects
were exposed to an intervention program known as More
Intelligent and Sensitive Child (Klein et aI., 1996). The treatment
was to help children develop the necessary basic skills for
learning and regain self-confidence in their capacity to learn and
reduce the scale ,of repetition and school dropouts. A post
intervention trend analysis of the academic performance of the
subjects across the groups revealed notable academic gains
(average score of ~ 50%) by 76.69% ' of the subjects.
Furthermore, the children who passed through the program
demonstrated discernible changes in building up self-confidence
and responsiveness.
