FISHERIES MANAGEMENT - A REVIEW OF THE CURRENT STATUS AND RESEARCH NEEDS IN ETHIOPIA

Abstract

The last few years have seen huge increases in fishing effort and
production on the major water bodies of the country. Already some stocks show signs of overfishing raising the issue of proper management of this natural renewable resource. This paper reviews some concepts used in fisheries biology and stock assessment and compares these with the current knowledge on the major stocks. A list of possible small research projects which would make a direct contribution to the rational management of the fisheries on these stocks is discussed.
